This simple homemade coleslaw is easy to make and comes together in less than 30 minutes. It is, to say the least, one of my favorite side salads with an amazing bbq pulled pork sandwich.

Tools Needed

Here are key tools I use to make this recipe:

Cutting board

Knife

Glass Mixing Bowl

Potato peeler to peel the carrots.

Vegetable Chopper. I highly recommend getting this chopper. It combines three different tools in one. It is my favorite tool and a must-have in the kitchen.

Ingredients Needed

Green cabbage. This is the main ingredient in this recipe.

Purple cabbage. A small amount of purple cabbage for color. If you don't like purple cabbage, substitute with green cabbage or completely omit.

Carrot. Add some sweetness with carrots and a pop of color.

Mayonnaise. I have a really great recipe for homemade mayonnaise. It takes less than 5 minutes to put together, and it's super tasty. No time? Hellman's is my preferred store-bought mayo.

Lemon juice. Adds tart, zesty, and citrusy characteristics.

Honey. Sweeten the dressing with honey, making a healthier choice.

Ground black pepper. A sharp heat that typically enhances the flavor of any dish with citrusy and earthy notes. The coarser the grind, the more pronounced the flavor will be. The fresher the grind of the pepper, the more pronounced the flavors will be.

Salt. Highlights all the flavors added to the recipe

How to Make The Recipe

This slaw is so easy to make!

  1. Using a knife (I use a big butcher knife), slice the green cabbage into four pieces. Then start thinly slicing the cabbage into 1-2 inch long strips.
    • It can be really tough to cut the cabbage into paper-thin strips, so the thinnest you can cut is good enough.
  2. Take about ¼ of the purple cabbage and cut it like the green cabbage.
  3. Peel the carrots with the potato peeler. Using the vegetable chopper, slice the carrots with the green julienne attachment.
    • Choose your julienne size. I like my carrots cut into small pieces, so I use the fine julienne attachment.
  4. Make the coleslaw dressing. Using this recipe, make homemade mayonnaise or use Hellman's.
    • Combine all the ingredients and mix in a small bowl.
  5. Mix cabbages and carrots together, add the coleslaw sauce, and mix well.
    • I like to mix this salad using disposable gloves.
  6. Serve with your favorite dish.

What to Serve with This Recipe

My favorite time of the year to start making this salad is when bbq season is in full swing. This easy coleslaw salad recipe pairs well with grilled meats, smoked meats and any meats with bbq sauce.
