Are Whole Wheat Tortillas Healthy?
There are 3 benefits to making completely whole wheat flour tortillas:
- Rich in fiber - this helps with digestion, keeps you full longer and maintains blood sugar levels.
- Lots of nutrients - zinc, iron, magnesium, B vitamins and more.
- Add to the balanced meal. If you are eating healthy, this is going to balance your meal with the right kind of calories. It will not only add carbs, but good fats and protein. (see nutrition facts below)
How To Make Healthy Tortillas
Let's get to making the tortillas!
Ingredients Needed

Whole wheat flour. I use King Arthur Whole Wheat Flour.
Water. Really warm water to mix the dough properly. Tap water works well.
Salt. Fine sea salt will add and elevate the flavours.
Oil. Use oil of your choice. I have olive oil on hand and used in this recipe.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Add all the ingredients to a bowl and start mixing with a utensil like a hand dough whisk.

Step 2: Transfer the dough to a cutting board or table and knead by hand until all the ingredients are incorporated well, about 5 minutes.

Step 3: Divide the dough into six large pieces or twelve smaller pieces, depending on the tortilla size you want. In this image, I made large burrito tortillas. Form them into balls and cover with plastic wrap to rest for 20-30 minutes.

Step 4: Roll out the dough balls into tortillas. Make sure to flour the surface area and dough ball well to prevent from sticking.
Tip for rolling out a good circle: Press down with your fingers to flatten the ball first. Then, use the rolling pin - start rolling in the center, turn the dough a quarter to one side, and roll again. Repeat until you get the tortilla to a uniform circular shape.
Step 5: Heat a pan on medium heat. There is no need for any oil here. Add the tortilla to the pan and cook for 30-60 seconds. The dough will start bubbling up. I like to slightly lift the tortilla to ensure it has some light browning and then I flip to the other side to brown as well.
I used a 12-inch cast iron pan for my burrito wraps and a 9-inch cast iron pan for my smaller tortilla wraps.

Step 6: Cover the tortillas with a kitchen towel to prevent them from drying out. The heat from the tortillas will also help keep them soft.
Creative Ways to Enjoy Whole Wheat Tortillas
Make a chicken shwarma wrap filled with incredibly flavorful chicken, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, and a Greek yogurt sauce.

Making a breakfast burrito is a perfect way to use a whole wheat tortilla. Add scrambled eggs, garlic and herb cream cheese, and homemade sausage patties. Roll up the burrito, crisp up the outside on a pan and enjoy with salsa on the side.
Storing Tortillas
- Store tortillas in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to one week.
- Freeze tortillas in a ziploc bag for up to 4-5 weeks.
- To reheat, place in the microwave and heat until warm and soft.
